At The Intersection Of Hawaii and China

photo: Chris-Seufert / Flickr / Creative Commons

Aloha. Guess what? I’ll be in Hawaii from May 24th to June 4th …working.
What does this have to do with China?
In the short term for the next few weeks. Nothing. In the long term for the coming years. Everything. Before I go into that, let me try and sum up how I got myself in this envious position of spending eight days in Oahu, Kauai, Maui and The Big Island connecting good people to each other so great things can happen.
I’ve spent the …

The China Business Network Relaunches May

The China Business Network — which has been in stealth mode since closing its first round of funding — relaunches this month with invitations going out to charter members across various sectors of China business. Each charter member added in the beta phase represents several levels of expertise that will lay the foundation for a vision that’s been two years in the making.
In plain English, we’ve taken decades worth of Rolodexes of a number of great people in our China business circles and built a platform that allows us to …

These Geeks Are Getting On A Plane In June

All I have to say is *wow* what an amazing group of people I’ve had a chance to touch base with over the past few days. Everyone brings with them a positive vibe and shared excitement about getting on a long haul flight together, enduring jet lag and hopping from city to city meeting equally inspired locally based entrepreneurs in a span of 8 days. *whew
I’ll be profiling each of the folks in our group in the coming days. In the meantime, this is going to rock. Dave McClure is …

Release of Afterquake

Received my friend Dave Liang’s email announcement regarding the release of Afterquake and wanted to share it with everyone in hopes you’ll support this awesome initiative between folk musician Abigail Washburn and The Shanghai Restoration Project.
SRP Fans,
In commemoration of the one year anniversary of the China earthquakes,
The Shanghai Restoration Project announces the release of Afterquake.
Co-produced by American folk artist Abigail Washburn and myself in
cooperation with Sichuan Quake Relief, this seven-song EP remixes
children’s voices and ambient sounds from the China earthquake zone to
raise awareness for victims still in need.
For context, listen …

Kris Krug and Danielle Sipple are getting Shanghaied

Hey Shanghai. Kris Krug is coming back to town and he’s bringing Fierce Kitty with him.
From June 11-22. Kris will be capturing shots of the city and its people only to turn around and set them free for everyone to see.
Kris and I are collaborating on a project that’s going to show the world what Creative Commons can do to help bridge the wide gap of understanding between China and the west.
We’re going to publish a book that shares portraits, interviews and essays of people we meet who are influencing …

I Write For A Commie Newspaper

If you were in the business of trying to help bridge the gap between China and the West, and you had the opportunity to contribute an op/ed a few times a month to a new English language Chinese newspaper in China, would you do it?
When a well respected long time China expat asked me if I wanted to write for the new English language version of the Global Times, I said cool. Why not?
So going forward, a few times a month I’ll be sharing my opinions in the Foreigner’s View …

Geeks On A Plane To Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Baijiu

Q: What happens when a fangirl of Dave McClure’s connects him with a cool Austrian dude based in Shanghai named George Godula?
A: Dave decides to take a group of investors and tech entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley to meet an amazing list of counterparts George is getting together in Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai and the Geeks On A Plane tour kicks off.
I first met Dave last year when he dropped by The China Business Network’s Silicon Dragon dinner to introduce himself and apologize for not being able to stay. Early indication …
