Geeks On A Plane To Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Baijiu

3 May 2009

Geeks On A PlaneQ: What happens when a fangirl of Dave McClure’s connects him with a cool Austrian dude based in Shanghai named George Godula?

A: Dave decides to take a group of investors and tech entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley to meet an amazing list of counterparts George is getting together in Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai and the Geeks On A Plane tour kicks off.

I first met Dave last year when he dropped by The China Business Network’s Silicon Dragon dinner to introduce himself and apologize for not being able to stay. Early indication he was a crazy busy guy but really nice about it imho.

So I started reading his blog and became an instant fangirl. Don’t worry, my boyfriend is aware of this and is supportive of my tendencies to praise people who are doing things bigger than themselves to lead a community …and can use a lot of swear words while doing it. Heh.

All this tour planning lately got me a bit nostalgic for our China 2.0 Tour from last November. I had an opportunity just before the China 2.0 Tour last year to take a few minutes of Dave’s time and get his thoughts on China tech from a Silicon Valley perspective.

Here’s what he had to say:

I’ve had the opportunity to attend a Startonomics conference Dave co-organized and a Startup2Startup dinner – both being examples of Dave’s ability to bring together a group of really high caliber speakers, attendees and sponsors in a pro-entrepreneur environment. The Geeks On A Plane tour is an international extension of the types of events Dave is known for organizing. It’s going to make a huge impact for those who participate in that it accelerates the opportunity for everyone involved to make key cross border connections on both sides and develop the start of solid business relationships.

I am excited to be part of the organizing team and really looking forward to seeing whether George and his friends in China give Dave and Company the full immersion into Chinese business culture by teaching them what “gan bei” means a la welcome shots of baijiu.  I’m reminded of a great post by Imagethief on “How To Survive A Chinese Drinking Party”
